15 Things to Do in Houston This Spring
Spring is Houston's best-kept secret. Before the summer heat sets in, the city comes alive with festivals, outdoor adventures, and cultural events. Whether you're new to town or a lifelong Houstonian, here's your spring bucket list.
Outdoor Adventures
1. Bike the Buffalo Bayou Trail
The 26-mile trail system along Buffalo Bayou is at its most beautiful in spring. Start at Eleanor Tinsley Park, ride past the iconic bat colony under the Waugh Drive Bridge, and end with brunch in The Heights.
2. Kayak on Buffalo Bayou
Rent a kayak from Buffalo Bayou Partnership and paddle through the heart of downtown. It's a completely different perspective of the skyline, and spring water levels make for ideal paddling conditions.
3. Explore Memorial Park
With the ongoing Land Bridge and Prairie restoration, Memorial Park is better than ever. The Eastern Glades trails offer a peaceful escape, and the wildflowers are stunning in March and April.
4. Stroll the Houston Arboretum
Free admission, 155 acres of trails, and a newly renovated nature center make this a perfect morning outing — especially with kids.
Food & Drink
5. Hit the Urban Harvest Farmers Market
Every Saturday morning at Eastside (formerly the old Farmer's Market location). Local produce, artisan goods, live music, and the best people-watching in town.
6. Crawfish Season
It's not spring in Houston without a crawfish boil. Head to The Boil House, Crawfish & Noodles, or LA Crawfish for some of the best in the city. Pro tip: order them spicy with extra garlic butter.
7. Patio Season on Washington Ave
Before it's too hot to sit outside, take advantage of the patios along Washington Avenue. Axelrad, Barca, and Truck Yard all offer great outdoor vibes.
Culture & Events
8. Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo
Running through late March, RodeoHouston is the city's signature event. World-class concerts, rodeo competitions, carnival rides, and the best BBQ cook-off you'll ever attend.
9. Visit the Menil Collection
Always free, always world-class. The Menil's permanent collection spans ancient to contemporary, and the Rothko Chapel next door is one of Houston's most meditative spaces.
10. Catch an Astros Game
Opening Day at Minute Maid Park is a Houston tradition. Even if you're not a die-hard fan, the atmosphere, food, and retractable roof make it a great outing.
11. First Saturdays in the Museum District
Many of Houston's 19 Museum District institutions offer free admission on the first Saturday of each month. Plan a full day hitting the MFAH, HMNS, and the Contemporary Arts Museum.
Family Fun
12. Houston Zoo
Spring is the best time to visit before summer crowds. The new Galápagos Islands exhibit is a must-see, and the zoo's conservation programs make it a meaningful experience for kids.
13. Space Center Houston
Home of NASA's Johnson Space Center and the best STEM field trip in Texas. The tram tour to see the actual Mission Control and Saturn V rocket never gets old.
14. Discovery Green
Downtown's 12-acre park hosts free concerts, movie nights, and festivals throughout spring. Pack a blanket and enjoy the skyline views.
15. Galveston Day Trip
Just 50 minutes south, Galveston's beaches, Strand historic district, and Moody Gardens make for the perfect spring day trip before the island gets packed in summer.
